WISSOTA drivers win big in Arizona action
WISSOTA standouts Don Shaw, Ricky Weiss and Cole Searing, among others, turned a lot of heads in regard to the strength of competition in WISSOTA country during recent action at Arizona Speedway, in San Tan Valley, AZ.
National Late Model champions Don Shaw and Ricky Weiss both won two features each during the six-race mini-series. Shaw was third in series points, and Weiss fifth, against tough competition like World of Outlaws Champion Brandon Sheppard, Knoxville Nationals two-time winner Mike Marlar, Illinois phenom Bobby Pierce, and hard-driving Modified crossovers Ricky Thornton, Jr. and Ryan Gustin.
In the X-Mods, Huron, South Dakota’s Searing put on an absolute clinic in his first open-wheeled action. He notched three wins and won the series points by nearly 100 markers. DJ Tesch, another South Dakota native, was Mr. Consistency during the week, finishing second in series points to Searing.
Scott Ward was one of few drivers to qualify for each Late Model feature, and his best finish was sixth in a feature; he finished ninth in series points.
Other remarkable performances from WISSOTA regulars included Modified feature wins by Blake Jegtvig and Dustin Strand, while Shane Sabraski finished second in the series points after a very consistent week, and X-Modified wins by Scott Bintz and Jason VandeKamp. Lucas Rodin’s trips around Arizona Speedway were also successful, and he parlayed his finishes into a fourth-place finish in series points.
After a week in the desert, all of the WISSOTA drivers did the WISSOTA racing region proud – fans and critics alike took notice of just how successful drivers from the upper Midwest were during the six-race mini-series.
The January issue of All The Dirt! Racing News (www.allthedirt.com), in the mail January 23, covers all the action night by night, and includes photos of the WISSOTA drivers in victory lane.
