Kyle Peterlin Powers to Hibbing Challenge Series Win

The 2023 season for the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series made the trek north to the Hibbing Raceway in Hibbing, Minnesota for the second night of the 2023 XR Northern Storm week and Hibbing racer Kyle Peterlin defended his home turf perfectly by winning the $2,000 Tuesday night show in front of his hometown crowd.

Pat Doar started the night by setting fast time and a new Hibbing Raceway track record with a lap of 12.883 seconds around the tight oval, while Peterlin, Skeeter Estey, Jay Kintner and Kevin Burdick topped the four qualifying heat races early in the night’s program.

Derek Vesel and Zach Wohlers earned the front row for the night’s 40-lap, $2,000-to-win feature event with Jeffrey Massingill getting the upper hand on the initial start from the inside of the second row and leading the field into turn number one on the opening circuit.

Massingill and Vesel battled early for the lead, while quickly approaching lapped traffic. Massingill began working through the back of the field on lap 11, while 5th starting Peterlin appeared in third and began to make it a three-car battle for the top spot.

Peterlin pulled up alongside Massingill for the lead on lap 14, while Kevin Burdick moved in on Wohlers for fourth as well as the field approached the half way point.

On lap 20, Massingill lead Peterlin, Wohlers, Estey and Burdick as Jake Redetzke lurked just outside the top five. Great side by side battles were ongoing through traffic between Massingill and Peterlin and also between Estey and Wohlers just behind the leaders.

Peterlin was finally able to make the pass for the lead on lap 29 and was able to lead the remaining 11 circuits to claim his 4th Challenge Series victory ahead of early leader Massingill. Estey topped Wohlers for third and Redetzke was able to slip by Burdick into the top five with just two laps to go.

Cole Chernosky won a thriller of a WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature, while Shane Sabraski drove off with the WISSOTA Modified feature victory to cap off the night.
