JIM FALLS, WI– Fantastic weather at Eagle Valley Speedway greeted a nice crowd on Father’s Day when Miller Lite sponsored six classes of racing with the WISSOTA AMSOIL dirt track series Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks, EVS Pure Stocks, and EVS Hornets.

Feature winners included Steve Hallquist, Eric Olson, Joe Chaplin, George Richards, Doug Wojcik, and Kasey Gross.
Mark Hanson and Steve Hallquist led the modifieds to the line as Hallquist took the lap one lead and held off all challengers for his first win of 2013 in his new MB Customs race car. The race was run without a yellow as a very talented field jockeyed for position and settled into line. There were cars working both the high and low grooves in an attempt to gain ground. Fourth starting Jake Hartung never let Hallquist get away and attempted to make passes on the low side during the last two laps, but Hallquist prevailed. They were followed to the finish by Hanson, Jay Richardson, and Mike Anderson.

The Super Stocks have consistently run terrific shows this year and tonight was no exception, as Tony Falkner and Shane Kisling brought them to green with Kisling earning the lap one lead. Falkner brought out the caution on lap three, ending his night and Matt McEathron went to the work area and restarted in the rear. On the restart, third starting Eric Olson made his presence known as he drove into second and began to battle for the lead. Kisling chose the high line and Olson the low as they pulled away from the rest of the field. At the halfway point, Olson attacked again and shortly thereafter, a side by side battle began and continued for several laps. With two laps to go, Olson gained the advantage and in heavy lapped traffic on the final lap, Olson secured the win. Kisling, Mark Stender, James Cimfl, and Trent Kroening rounded out the top five.

In the Midwest Modified feature, Ross Fuhrman and Mike Schnider lead the field at the start with Fuhrman taking the early lead. He held the point for several laps when Robert Ellsworth spun to bring out the caution. On the restart, sixth starting Joe Chaplin took the lead. Another caution was displayed for Craig Elliot as his night ended. The restart put eight starting Shane Halopka behind the leader but Chaplin pulled out to a comfortable lead and dominated the remainder of the event. He was followed to the checkers by Halopka, Nick Koehler, Fuhrman, and Kent Baxter.

Jason Beardon and Mike Knudtson set off the Street Stock battle with fourth starting Adam Soltis taking the point on lap one. A lap latter, sixth starting Danny Richards stole the lead as Doug Wojcik, Cody Kummer, and Knutson fought for third. The only yellow in the event was thrown for Andrew Cimfl, resetting the field. After the restart, Wojcik used the high lane to take over the lead and not look back. The race continued to the checkered flag with Richards, Soltis, and Knutson finishing in the top five.

The Pure Stock race was paced by Trenton Holub and Todd Roshell. Immediately, George Richards drove from the second row to battle side by side with Roshell for two laps. On the third lap, Roshell slipped high and Richards took over. On lap five the field was brought together by a caution for the spinning Holub. The race settled in and continued to the end with Richards taking yet another feature win, followed by Roshell, Dalton Hazelton, Troy Potaczek, and Holub.
Eight Hornets took the green with Justin Franson at the point flanked by Armond Love. Soon, seventh starting Kasey Gross took the lead and never looked back. Behind him, Armond Love held second as Jay Welk and Scott Westaby raced for third. Westaby secured the position and closed to battle with Love, taking another position. Gross cruised to the win leading Westaby, Love, Welk, and Kurt Kadinger in the top five.

Racing action continues Sunday, June 23, 2013 with a full card of racing sponsored by Coca Cola Enterprises.

Spring Valley MN–Mother Nature again tried to put a halt to the racing action at Deer Creek Speedway by dropping a early afternoon shower onto the speedway. The crew quickly worked the moisture into the speedway and got the show underway just a little after 6. 112 racers showed up to do battle on the fast and tacky speedway. A great group of Scouts joined in on the activities at the speedway on the night as all Scouts in uniform got into the speedway for free.

Bernie Adams powered outside of Noah Grinstead to take the early lead in the SixTwo Graphics WISSSOTA Street Stock feature on lap one. Karl Hewitt Jr. worked into second by the end of lap one, while an early three wide battle for fourth took place. Danny Richards, Troy Voth and Mike Blowers battled for the fourth spot until Richards took the spot on lap two. Blowers started to pressure Richards again on lap five as they moved past Grinstead for third and fourth. Up front Hewitt Jr., started to gain ground on Adams. With seven completed the top five started to close into each other on the speedway. On lap eight Blowers and Richards were side by side for third. Blowers took the spot and then quickly worked under Hewitt Jr. for the second spot. Lap eleven saw Blowers work past Adams to take over the lead of the race. Richards worked under Hewitt Jr. for the third spot on lap fourteen. Richards dove under Adams for the second spot coming to the checkers. Adams was onto the game as he cut back under Richards to retake the second spot as the checkers flew over the field. Shaun Mann and Karl Hewitt Jr won the heat races earlier in the night

The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were on the track next for their feature action. Jesse Hernandez took the early lead with Jared Boumeester and Casey Trom racing for second. Hernandez slowed at the completion of lap one bringing out the caution. On the restart Boumeester took the lead with Jason Born close behind in second. Born took over the top spot as lap two completed with Trom sitting in third behind Boumeester. Boumeester slowed bringing out the caution on lap five. On the restart Born and Dustin Scott battled for the lead. Scott took over the top spot while Born and Trom raced for second. Scott looked strong up front and with eight down started to build a good lead. Born sat in second with Trom close behind in third. Mike Mehling and Beau Lammers raced for the fourth spot. Mehling took over fourth and on lap eight moved past Trom for third. Trom fought hard and on lap ten retook the third spot. The final caution flew on lap fourteen with Scott leading again. Born and Trom had a great battle for the second spot. With two to go Born and Trom continued to battle hard as Trom touched the wall on the back straight slowing dramatically and ending a great run. Scott took home the checkers with Born, Boumeester, Pfeifer Jr., and Lammers rounding out the top five. Scott, Pfeifer Jr. and Born won the heat races earlier.

It was the Cory Crapser show again in the Left Lane Transport USRA B-Modifieds on this night as he jumped out front at the start. Jacob Bleess moved into second on a restart on lap two with Tyler Creely in third. Alex Williamson put pressure on Creely quickly as they raced for third. Williamson took over third on lap four as another caution flew. On the restart Williamson and Bleess battled for the secondspot as Cole Queensland moved under Ben Moudry for the fifth spot. Bleess held onto the second spot while Queensland now in fourth moved up to race with Williamson in third. With eleven completed Queensland moved under Williamson to take over the third spot as another caution flew. On the restart Crapser led while Queensland made a strong move from the outside of the second row and drove under Bleess for second. Bleess and Queensland battle for the next two laps for the second spot with Queensland holding a slight edge. On lap fifteen another caution saw Crapser leading with Queensland in second. Bleess, Williamson and Moudry in the top five. A final caution flew on the last lap as Creely caught the back stretch wall sliding back across the track and collecting Jerry Young who then got collected by Al Wagner.

Lansing, MN–A beautiful day drew a huge crowd at Chateau Raceway for fan appreciation night. Every person that came out took advantage of the free front gate admission and they jammed the speedway full. LD Ag of Hartland, Farm Boy BBQ of St. Ansgar, IA and Misgen Auto Parts of Ellendale sponsored the evening and made the fan appreciation night possible.

The Misgen Auto Parts Pure Stock had a wild 15-lap feature that saw only six of the 12-starters around at the finish. There were numerous yellow flags for crashes and spins that kept the race at slow pace. When the green flag was out the racing was intense as Adam Godeke led until Keith Weber passed him on lap six.

Jason Newkirk got to second and Matt Brooks was third on lap 10. Brooks would spin to trigger a caution on lap 11, then two laps later Brady Krohnberg and Dylan Nelson got together to stop the race and set up a two lap shootout. While the caution was out, Newkirk’s machine erupted in smoke and he headed pitside. A big fire then broke out in his car up in the work area. After a brief scare the fire was extinguished with no injuries.

Weber led the last two laps for his second win in a row. Dylan Nelson finished in second with Brooks third. Godeke would finish in fourth and Zach Elward rouneded out the top five.

Two cautions started the LD Ag USRA B-Mod feature. Jerry Young led until lap two when Kylie Kath zipped by. Jerad Boumeester moved to third with Kadden Kath and Josh Mattick right on him. Mattick drove to third and then challenged Young for second on lap seven and eight. Kadden Kath moved to third past Boumeester as older brother Kylie still led the pack.

Kylie Kath led until he spun with a flat left rear tire to trigger a caution. Mattick was then the leader with Kadden Kath all over him for the lead. They ran close on laps 11 and 12 until Kath stole the lead. The 14-year old Kath led the pack to the checkered flag for his first career win. Mattick was second and Young placed third. Boumeester finished fourth and Charlie Steinberg had a great run in fifth.

Noah Grinstead led lap one of the Albert Lea Steel WISSOTA Street Stock feature with Brandon Shaner along with Kory Adams on his tail. Adams would nab second after a second lap restart and then took the lead when Grinstead drifted high. Mike Blowers was now second with Shaner third.

Adams and Blowers raced close and after tow cautions on lap seven and nine got back to business for the lead. Blowers tried the low groove and then went to the top and made the pass on lap 10. Blowers scored his third consecutive win with Adams in second. Jason Barber had a good run in third with Grinstead fourth and Brent Holland fifth.
Jake Stark led Jesse Hernandez early in the Farm Boy BBQ WISSOTA Midwest Modified main. Hernandez stalled and Ryan Siegle had no place to go and tagged him. The caution came out but it was for Luke Hainka before the frontstretch incident took place.

Mike Mehling got to second on the restart, but everyone watched Robbie Franklin who was flying up on the top shelf. Franklin drove by two cars and then got Mehling for second and then bolted by Hernandez for the lead on lap six. Franklin checked out for his first win at Chateau, Greg Pfeifer Jr. out dueled Mehling for second with Jason Born and Hernandez in the top five.

Travis Shipman dominated the Power 96/KQAQ 970AM IMCA Stock Cars. Shipman came from fourth and took the lead from Kevin Vogt on lap two. Shipman then drove away from the pack even after a late restart. It would be Shipman’s second win while Vogt was second. Matt Speckman finished third with Andy Altenburg fourth and Brandon Vogt fifth.

The most dramatic race of the night was the French’s Repair and Fabrication USRA Modified feature. Front row starters Jacob Dahle and Todd Scharkey both declined the Brew Pub Pizza Challenge so that bonus will rise to $900 next week. Scharkey took off from row one and left the field in his wake while Dahle, Tommy Myer and Damon Haslip tried to keep up.

Brandon Davis slipped in the top five and then slipped past Haslip on lap five to take fourth. Myer was right on Dahle for second while Scharkey was long gone up front. Dahle and Myer continued their battle while Davis reeled them in. Myer got to second on lap nine and now Davis caught Dahle for third. Davis took over on lap 14 and Joe Horgdal worked his way to fourth.

Scharkey still held a big lead as Davis caught Myer for second on lap 23. Davis was really hooked up on the low side of the track and got Myer for second shortly before the white flag. Scharkey was seven car lengths ahead when Davis took second. Davis really cranked it up and as the white flag flew and was three cars lengths behind.

Scharkey ran the top groove the entire race and negotiated around Jeremy Misgen onm the final lap. Davis got an incredible run down the backstretch and zoomed to the inside of Scharkey as they entered turn four. Davis motored by Scharkey as the crowd went absolutely beserk as Davis crossed under the checkered flag first. Myer would finish third with Horgdal fourth and Haslip fifth.

For the first time in quite a while there were enough Y-Waste Removal Hornets to have heat races with 12-cars on hand this week. Chris Schumann would dominate the 10-lap feature for his first win. Jeremy Wenzel was second with Jason McShane third, Travis Morris fourth and Matthew Misgen fifth.

Ogilvie, MN – Three and four wide racing is what fans witnessed Saturday night at Ogilvie Raceway’s Saturday Night Shootout. The night of WISSOTA Amsoil Dirt Track Racing Series action was sponsored by Mora Chevrolet and Buick and the stands and trackside parking were filled with fans. Landon Atkinson, Jim Gullikson, Dan Gullikson, Justin Oestreich, Matthew Dibb all took feature wins with JT Johnson getting his first feature win ever in the Mods.

The WISSOTA Mod Fours kicked off the night with Chad Funt and Andy Nelson leading the way. Funt jumped into the lead but Ryan Buer quickly stole it. Landon Atkinson was coming for them and passed them both becoming the leader. Funt and Buer battled for second as Atkinson pulled away. Buer took second and the laps counted down. Tyler Larson grabbed third and worked Buer for second with Matt Halls closing in. Buer however pulled away from Larson keeping second while Atkinson took the checkers. Atkinson also won the heat giving himself a clean sweep for the night.

Pat Zerfas and Dan McCain battled for first as the green dropped for the JNP WISSOTA Street Stocks. Cars were stacked three and four wide allover causing a few cautions. As the race began again, Zerfas claimed the lead with Keith Tourville on his bumper. Tourville moved around Zerfas and took the lead.

Tourville lead through a few more cautions with Ryan Kostreba, Zerfas, Jim Gullikson and Kyle Howland on this trail. Gullikson and Kostreba moved next to Tourville for first and Gullikson took the point. Howland, Tourville and Schmidt kept close to Gullikson and Howland got a run at him. Howland was at Gullikson’s door and as he was ready to make his move something went wrong and Howland fell back. The yellow flew and drivers were realigned.

Gullikson was first on the restart with Schmidt grabbing second and Tourville in third. Kurt Becken and Justin Pogones went three wide with Tourville for third with Becken taking the point. Gullikson kept his lead and celebrated in victory lane with his son at his side. Sch midt, Becken, Tourville and Pogones took the top five points.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were the next feature of the night with Clark Perry grabbing the lead. Alan Bohlman and Brandon Bombardo battled for second while Dave and Tim Siercks went three wide with Travis Schulte. Schulte went to the high side and passed Bombardo and Bohlman taking second, but the yellow flew.

The field was reset with Perry alone on the restart. Justin Oestreich was back a few cars as he grabbed the high groove and quickly moved next to Bombardo for second. Jason VandeKamp moved next to Oestreich and Bombardo and they ran three wide for second. Oestreich pulled away and quickly took the lead with Perry keeping close in second. Oestreich stretched his lead out while VandeKamp worked Perry for second. VandeKamp nosed ahead of Perry, but after another restart, Perry and VandeKamp were door to door. VandeKamp again pulled ahead and took second with Perry, Schulte and Dave Siercks in the top five. Oestreich set the cruise control and took the checkers and another 2013 clean sweep.

Levi Voss grabbed the lead as the green waved for the Hornets with Zach Gaslin and Travis Swanson fighting for second. A loud bang made the red lights turn on and drivers scattered and stopped. Clay Blosberg’s car swerved to the right and Jasmin Matthewman was stuck and struck Blosberg’s side. Both drivers were ok, but both exited the track.

Voss kept his lead on the restart and Matthew Dibb joined Gaslin and Swanson for second. Dibb grabbed the low groove and rubbed tires with Swanson. Gaslin pulled away in second with Dibb holding third. Dibb then passed Gaslin and moved to Voss’ side for the lead. Dibb quickly made the pass and set the cruise control. Gaslin and Swanson went for third and Quain Busitzky was coming for them. They battled three wide for third with Busitzky taking the point. Busitzky then took second from Voss and Gaslin and Swanson went to Voss’ sides. Gaslin took third as Busitzky suffered a mechanical issue and went back in points. Dibb took the checkers with Swanson, Gaslin, Dan Rick and Gavin Rowland finishing behind him. Dibb also won the heat getting a clean sweep.

Larry Fitzsimmons and Ronnie Malecki lead the WISSOTA Super Stocks to the line, but when the green flew Chris Wark passed them and took the lead. Malecki, Fitzsimmons and Joel Collins went three wide for second with Fitzsimmons getting the point. Dan Gullikson charged through the field and took second. Collins settled in third as Gullikson closed the gap Wark had. Gullikson was at Wark’s side as the yellow flew.

Wark was alone on the restart but could feel the heat of Gullikson and Dave Mass on his rear. Gullikson moved next to Wark and took first with Wark in second and Mass in third. Gullikson put some air between him and the competition while Wark and Mass ran door to door. Mass nosed ahead and took second as Wark held third.

The Supers had back to back cautions and with not many laps to go Gullikson just had to hold on. Mass, Joe Oliver, Larry Fitzsimmons and Joel Collins took the top five points behind Gullikson and they finished in that same order.

The WISSOTA Modifieds were the final race of the night with father son team JT and Brett Johnson leading the way. JT grabbed the lead with Brett and Dustin Nelson going for second. Nelson took second and B. Johnson held off Dave Mass and Dave Cain who fought for fourth. Mass took fourth and worked B. Johnson for third, but Johnson pulled away. JT was enjoying his straight-away lead but Nelson grew closer and closer to JT as the laps went by. With four laps to go Nelson was on JT’s bumper. JT’s car slipped in turn two allowing Nelson to shoot under him and took the lead. JT didn’t slow down and kept close to Nelson.

Nelson’s car started to slow and JT flew past him. Nelson’s right rear tire was slowly going flat taking away his control. Nelson caught Zach Drews’ car and bounced over his tire. The yellow flew and drivers were reset with Nelson and Drews both out.

JT took off as the green flew and Johnson held off Mass and Jody Bellefeuille. As the checkered waved JT shot across the line taking his first feature win ever with his dad Brett in second. Bellefeuille, Mass and Cain finished out the top five as father and son celebrated the victory.

The Ogilvie Raceway welcomes the Advantage RV Modified Series Wednesday night and regular races will be ran on Saturday night with all races starting at 6:30 pm.

Fountain City, WI – Every fan of racing loves to watch a great battle for position; when that battle for position is for the lead, even better. When the battle for lead is in the closing laps of feature. look out, ‘cause the fans will be on their feet, the enthusiasm will be high and the drivers will be pushing just as hard as possible.

Friday night’s action at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY was a race fans dream, as every single feature event of the evening came right down to the final lap to determine who was going to be pulling into Victory Lane.

The true ‘scene setter’ of the evening’s excitement, and surely a feature finish which will be talked about for time to come, was the conclusion of the Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stock feature. A five-car battle for the lead, and eventual win, lasted the entirety of the 18-lap main event, and finally spilled over coming out of turn four to the checkered flag.

Pole Sitter Shaun Mann led the opening lap with his #01, while Mondovi, WI’s Danny Richards snuck passed outside-pole sitter Fred Prudoehl’s #2 to move up from his third place starting spot to second. By lap 2, Richards had moved into the lead and stayed out front for the next 11 laps while defending track champion Doug Wojcik and multi-time track champion, and former WISSOTA National Champion Danny Hanson worked through the competition towards the inevitable battle for the win.

For the entire feature, that solid five-car war raged on for racing room and command of the track. On lap 10, Wojcik worked past Hanson for second and on lap 14 Wojcik dispensed with Richards to take over the lead. While the digital scoring shows Wojcik leading the next three laps followed by Richards leading a lap and then Wojcik back out front for the 18th and final trip across the finish line, the trio of Wojcik, Hanson and Richards swapped the top spot at the very least three to four times per lap!

On the final lap both Hanson and Richards were back in front of Wojcik and the battle for the win finally boiled over in turns three and four. Wojcik recounted the events which transpired just in front of him in the final turns of the final lap, “I was running so strong in the high line, and that’s how I got to the front. But when I saw Richards drive so hard into three and then begin sliding up in turn four, I knew that if I wanted to survive, I needed to head for the bottom of the track.”

Richards 3R slid up the banking in turn four and slammed into the #5 of Hanson, sending both cars into the outside concrete in collision so fierce that it dug the front end of Hanson’s car into the racing surface, and simultaneously threw both a shower of sparks and Richards 3R into the air.

The contact was near deafening, and the rapidity in which Hanson’s car smashed to a halt was frightening! Richards ricocheted off Hanson’s car and limped towards the waving checkered flag. But by this time, Wojcik was already long gone and headed towards victory lane. Hanson, understandably, was livid. Climbing from the battered remains of his totaled car he was determined to ‘have a word or two’ with Richards . . . so determined, in fact, that speedway personnel had their hands full to keep the Alma, WI native away from Richards’ 3R.

In the heat of the moment, Wojcik rolled into Victory Lane and enjoyed the spot light, Richards was directed to his hauler with a waiving black flag, and Hanson was left to take the long walk alone all the way back to his hauler . . . but, as the race director, scoring personnel, speedway owners, and even WISSOTA Officials focused on the situation and events which led up to the climactic finish the official results changed.

Speedway owner Bob Timm explained, “We consulted with our own on-track officials, our race director, the scorers and even WISSOTA officials, and final ruling that we’ve come to is that this was a yellow-flag scenario, and we’re reverting back to the previous lap scored. At that time the running order was Richards, Hanson and the Wojcik. Richards, though, received the black flag, and this moved Hanson to the front . . . thereby claiming the feature win.

“We’re sorry that Danny didn’t get his time in Victory Lane”, continued Timm, “but I hope most will understand, that with the commotion on the track, the clean-up crew attending to the wrecked machinery, our safety crew confirming that Danny was indeed ok, and rain showers beginning to appear in the area, a lot was taking place. The first unofficial reaction was to interview Doug Wojcik in Victory Lane, as he crossed the line first.”

Hanson while understandably upset, was able to offer these thoughts, “You can’t drive through somebody to win,” he said. “You just can’t do that. He just came right, square off the bottom and ran me right into the frickin’ concrete.”

Shawn Mann completed the top three in the results.

CISEWSKI CAPTURES 600 MOD WIN WITH LAST LAP LAST TURN PASS

Winona, MNs Bob Cisewski finally blasted his way into Victory Lane with an early August 2012 feature win. Friday night, nothing was going to keep him from a return to Victory Lane . . . not even his good friend, defending Track Champion Greg Wohletz.

It only took Cisewski two laps to move his Ace Auto #40 from the starting position of sixth to second in the running order. For the next 15 laps his sole focus was reeling in the red and yellow #32 of Wohletz, who’d stepped away from the field and opened up a commanding lead. Lap after lap Cisewski slowly but surely closed the gap on Wohletz, and as the duo crossed beneath the waiving white flag for the final lap, Cisewski was there to battle for the lead.

Turns one and two, Cisewski ran the ultra-high line to get up alongside of Wohletz, but Wohletz rocketed out of turn two with a slight advantage compliments of the ultra-low groove which he’d been using almost the entire feature. Turn three saw Cisewski pushing the cushion up high again, and as the two came zipping out of turn four, Cisewski’s momentum carried him just the slimmest distance ahead of Wohletz to claim the win.

“Greg and I are great friends”, commented Cisewski in Victory Lane, “it’s always great racing with him; but, to get this win, I’m speechless.” Cisewski’s post-race comments were almost identical, “You know, it’s always best to win, but if I’m going to finish second, it’s great to see Bob beating me to the line.” Current point leader Don Werner rounded out the top
three as the checkered flag waived.

ANGST TURNING THINGS AROUND WITH A-MOD FEATURE WIN

2010 Track Champion Josh Angst has had his work cut out for him through the initial stages of the 2013 season. Friday night, things were back where he liked them, as he was able to pilot his Culver’s of Winona #99 to a clean sweep winning both the second heat race and the evenings River City Manufacturing USRA Modified Winona County Employees 25 lap feature.

But, like the two previous results already highlighted, Angst’s step to the win came with some late-race action. Decorah, IA’s Dan Bohr wrestled the lead away from local driver Lance Hofer on lap two and looked ready to make his maiden voyage into Victory Lane for the 2013 season. From lap two through lap 17 Bohr’s #66 was out front and seemingly sailing towards
victory. But, a cliché is a cliché because makes sense time and time again . . . this feature was not going to be over until it was over!

In turn four on lap 17 a lapped car slid up the banking directly into the line of Bohr’s high-line missile. Just enough sheet metal was wrinkled to slow Bohr’s momentum, Angst, who’d slowly caught Bohr since stepping into second on lap eight, saw the opportunity and pounced like a stalking tiger.

Angst, then, sailed to his feature win and celebrated a change in his season, “we have struggled a bit early this season”, commented Angst in Victory Lane, “but last night we really got things corrected and tonight shows that we’re back to running the way we can.”

Bohr settled was an obviously heart-breaking second place finish, Hofer and current point leader Jake Timm finishing third and fourth ahead of Brad Waits in fifth.

TOMMY RICHARDS STEALS SUPER WIN FROM WIERSGALLA IN LAST TURN

Defending Track Champion Tommy Richards continued the theme of late race passes for the win. Former Track Champion Gary Wiersgalla, who struggled through a somewhat disappointing 2012, has recently turned the tables and is once again enjoying runs at the front of the pack in the Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stock division. After a third place feature finish the previous week, his familiar blue and white #52 was enjoying an extended stay at the front of the field as the closing laps of the Super Stock feature approached.

Despite a six-car battle at the front of the field, Wiersgalla remained out front leading the way towards what was an expected win. Wiersgalla led the second lap of the feature before being passed by Kelly Anderson’s J-Mev Motorsports #8 and settling into second until retaking the lead on lap 12 of the 20 lap feature.

But with two laps remaining, Richards put the low groove to work and snuck past Wiersgalla who was running about as high as seemingly possible. The two traded the top spot back and forth with Richards just barely pulling out the win as the two crossed the line almost directly side by side.

Richards enjoyed the win, Wiersgalla settled for second, with Dan Bork, Anderson and Jay Oricchio completing the top five.

WILLIAMSON WINS FIRST FEATURE OF 2013

Young Alex Williamson bested the 22-car Black Horse Bar Grill USRA B-Mod main event, holding off Shaun Walski in second, Cory Crapser in third, Chris Gilbertson third heat race winner Jacob Bleess in fourth and fifth respectively.

BOBBY FORT, JR BESTS THE PURE STOCK DIVISION

Bobby Fort, Jr. took advantage of Eric Duellman’s hard luck and motored his way to his first MTS Pure Stock feature win of the 2013 season. Heat race winner Duellman, who appeared to have the field covered with his #22 saw his hopes for another feature win of the season go up in smoke, had to pull off early and handed the lead/win over to Fort.

Paul Sweazey survived a near head-on collision with the spinning #94 of Lee Hager, and raced to a surprising second place finish with a car that crossed the finish line looking more like a modified than a pure stock. Josh Malchaski rounded out the top three.

HALE AND WILLIAMSON WIN MINI-MOD FEATURES ON LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY

Jackson Hale raced his way to the front of the field and a Sunshine Sanitation A Mini Mod feature on the Lightning Speedway while young Devin Williamson bested the competition to collect

Ashland, WI- For the second straight week, Kevin Eder made a late-race pass of the leader and stole away with a feature win at the ABC Raceway, as Northern Finnish Mutual Insurance and Baxter’s Speed Shop presented a full night of exciting AmsOil Dirt Track Series racing action on Saturday.

Included in the program was the track’s annual visit from the Northern Vintage Stockcar Racers (NVSR) club, which brought an assortment of restored classic racers to run around the three-eighths-mile red-clay oval.

Just as he got around Curt Myers with two laps left in last week’s WISSOTA Modified main event, Eder’s victim this week was Bill Byholm, who provided one of his best efforts here in a couple of years. And also in the mix – just as he was last week -was Al Uotinen, who again came home in third.

The beginning of the 20-lapper was spoiled by an early wreck on the opening turn of the race, with eight cars collected in the melee and the rides of three potential front-runners – Myers, Dean Yrjanainen and Jeff Spacek – either eliminated or badly damaged. On the ensuing restart Byholm worked outside on pole-starter Pat Cook to establish the early pace, while Uotinen sped quickly into third. When Spacek’s injured ride stalled on the front chute on lap 5 the field regrouped
for another restart, and it was here that Eder entered into the mix, taking third away from Cook on lap 6, just a circuit after Uotinen slipped around Cook for second. Just as Uotinen was getting an inside challenge run on Byholm for the lead,
Scott Hudack’s car looped in turn 2 to stop the race on lap 9.

Eder took advantage of Uotinen opting to restart on the low side of the second row when the field saw the green flag again, sweeping around both Uotinen and Byholm to grab the lead. But that move only kicked off a thrilling see-saw battle that had Eder and Byholm swapping the top spot with nearly every lap, as the second half of the run ran non-stop to its conclusion. Eder rode the high side to gain momentum around Byholm, but the Glidden veteran found some grip on the bottom line and would dig his way back to a fender-length edge at the flagstand the next time by. Finally, with two laps left, the young Ashland hotshoe nosed past Byholm and grabbed the lead for good, although Byholm was within a car-length at the checkers for second. Uotinen was hot on both of their tails, while fine runs by 11th-starting Rick Rivord and 14th-starting Brian Mikkonen for fourth and fifth were rather lost in all the excitement up front.

The WISSOTA Super Stock 20-lap A-main was also well-stocked with drama, and that was before Nick Oreskovich of Mason benefitted from Dave Flynn’s unfortunate bobble with two laps to go to gain the win.

After a first-lap tangle forced a complete restart, Flynn looked to be in command as he grabbed the lead from pole-starter Shawn Rivord. Oreskovich, meanwhile, wasted no time in grabbing third in the midst of a wild scramble for positions early. As Oreskovich gained another position by displacing Rivord, Scott Lawrence -holder of the last nine-straight ABC Super Stock championships – quickly came up from his eight-place starting spot to move into third.

The led trio flew nose-to-tail around the upper line of the sticky, lightning-fast red-clay oval, distancing themselves from the rest of the pack, until fourth-running Willie Johnsen spun on lap 7 to slow the pace. The leaders resumed their battle immediately after the restart – that is, until Lawrence’s car bobbled badly coming off turn 4 and lost several spots. However, he gained a reprieve when the caution light was turned on for Don Muzzy’s spin on the other end of the track and restarted third, albeit with a car with significant left-front steering and suspension damage.

The final 13 laps clicked off without delays but with plenty of plot twists. Lawrence continued to keep up with the lead pair while fighting his damaged car and a strong challenge from Ken Truscott, who was enjoying another late-race charge. With seven laps remaining Flynn had finally built some distance up on Oreskovich, but at that same point Lawrence’s car finally gave up and he slowed, moving Truscott into third and giving Randy Spacek and Wayne Stricker fourth place to battle for.

Oreskovich then closed the gap over the next few tours until, with two laps remaining, he made a move to the inside for the lead. Flynn slipped out of his groove and his car broke loose, giving the youngster the room he needed to take over the point and allowing Truscott, Spacek and Stricker to slip by as well before regrouping in fifth. The running order remained that way to the checkers.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds also provided a wild finish, decided by less than nine one-hundredths of a second. A three-car jumble on the opening lap mandated a complete restart of the 15-lapper, after which Chris Bretting raised eyebrows with an early strong run out front. Cole Spacek’s spin with three laps done forced Bretting to defend that lead for a restart, while Travis Nye snookered pole-starter Rick Przybylski for second, and visiting Shane Halopka copying the move for third a circuit later.

Nye used an inside move to take the lead on lap 5, and a fast-charging Jeff Klopstein leapfrogged up into second in the close-quarters racing up front. When Przybylski’s car stopped inside turn 4 on lap 7 it slowed the frantic pace, and things didn’t pick up again until after Przybylski’s get-together with Ross Fuhrman a lap later.

The back half of the run, however, was all green-flag, and it got very intense for Nye, who spent the entire balance of the race trying to hold off two very talented runners in Klopstein and Halopka. Klopstein posed the biggest threat, taking peeks to the inside while Nye held a steady line on the upper groove. But Halopka also took a couple of shots at bettering his showing as the laps wound down.

As the lead pair came to out of turn 4 for the final time, Klopstein got a good run off the corner and pulled alongside Nye, and they crossed the stripe nearly dead-even, with Nye, the division’s defending champ from Ashland, holding a .089-second edge on the visitor from Tomahawk. Halopka was not far back in third, while Paul Niznik led the balance of the field from a distance in fourth. John Kallas’ nice fifth-place effort was negated by a technical infraction after the race, giving Paul Sizik the spot at the pay window.

Todd Vernon of Ashland lost the lead late in the Six-Cylinder headliner, but a caution flag thrown at the same time saved him, and he took advantage to score his first career feature win. Vernon, who started on the pole, was part of a seven-car scramble up front vying for the lead during most of the race, as Scott Ovaska worked around him to take the point at the outset of the 15-lap affair. Ovaska, in fact, built up a full-second lead over the first five laps, while Vernon held on to second ahead of Ron Hmielewski, Tyler Hudack and others.

On lap 6 Pat Beeksma and Dale Coddington ganged up on Hudack for fourth and fifth, and shortly thereafter Hudack spun to bring out the first of the race’s two caution flags. Three laps later Vernon got a run on Ovaska for the lead and completed the inside pass on the next tour around, but on lap 11 Beeksma worked an even lower line and scored the top spot. However, Vernon was saved when a caution flag was thrown at that moment for the stalled ride of DeJay Mihalek, and when the field was shown the green light again Vernon took no chances, driving away from the field while Tiffany Hudack charged through to challenge for second.

Vernon scooted away to the landmark win, while Coddington passed both Tiffany Hudack and Ovaska in one move to take second during the last couple of laps. Beeksma was shuffled back to fifth in all the commotion.

Only in the Pure Stock feature was the victory most emphatically decided, as Superior’s Chad Carlson ran to a straightaway margin by just beyond mid-race and stayed there for the win. Tim Carbon led early, but just as Jeff Christman took the spot away on lap 2 Nick Nye’s spun car stopped the action. Carbon led the field again for the restart, but Carlson moved by on the high side and sailed away, despite the car smoking badly for the majority of the race.

By lap 5 Carlson’s lead was over half a straightaway, and it increased significantly throughout the uninterrupted balance of the race. Carbon, who held second the rest of the way, wasn’t really challenged until Nye took third from Christman and closed the gap, but Nye ended up about a car-length short at the checkers, with Christman in tow for fourth. Visiting Chad Nikstad enjoyed a solid fifth-place run.

The vintage racers provided an entertaining offering in both Full-Bodied Stocker and Super-Modified classes. In the Full-Bodied feature Mike Pappenfus of Osceola put his baby-blue ’67 Chevelle out front early, then fought a squirrely car to stay there while fending off the challenges of Gary Whipple and Greg Scheffer for the win. Steve Baker and Paul Dolphy filled out the top five.

When the Super-Mods took to the track for their headliner, Mark Peine grabbed the early advantage, but Dennis Olson slipped past on the inside line on lap 2, and the Braham, MN, veteran pilot held off a close-knit group of challengers in John Bethke, Peine and Joe L’Allier for the win. Wally Stoltzman came home in fifth.

A total of 96 racing entries were in action, including the 15 NVSR racers in attendance. Fast-lap bonuses were awarded to Flynn in the Supers (17.252 seconds) and Vernon in the Sixes (18.285), as cool, humid weather and a fast track produced lap times in all four transponder-scored features (including for the Mods and Mid-Mods) that were within a half-second of their respective track records.

Next Saturday the ABC Raceway invites fans to “Jam the Stands” by offering a five-dollar adult admission ticket to its five-division race program, to be presented by Heartland Communications. Hot laps are set for 6:15 pm, and racing gets underway at 7. “Race Night” will air live on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and at www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with at-the-track news and weather updates.

The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.

(St. Croix Falls) Mother Nature asserted herself again Friday night at St. Croix Valley Raceway. Rain caused the first five shows of the season to be cancelled, and it delayed Friday’s races for several minutes after a short but heavy shower during intermission. After the soaking, track officials and a multitude of racers worked the clay back into shape, prepping the track for yet another round of exciting feature races before the show closed out with some light-hearted and carnage-filled trailer racing.

With the new moisture thoroughly worked back into the surface, the Pure Stocks thrilled the crowd as Tim Baxter and Jake Silbernagel paced the field to green. From the start, the veteran Baxter held the point with Silbernagel and Krysta Swearingen in tow. By the second lap, Swearingen and Jason Havel worked by Silbernagel, and a few laps later, Havel and Swearingen swapped places. Just prior to halfway, Havel powered his Thunderbird to the point. Baxter hung tough for a few laps before yielding to a surging Silbernagel on lap ten. From there, the field settled in to comfortable grooves to the end with Havel picking up his third clean sweep of the season over Silbernagel, Baxter, Swearingen and Tony DuBois.
The second feature of the night saw Team Rollover, Damon Roberts and heat race winner Dylan Roberts on the front row. It was inside starting Damon Roberts setting the pace, with Dylan Roberts settling in second followed by Brock Anderson and Dan Strobach. The Future Fours ran fairly consistent throughout the race until, with just two laps remaining, Strobach’s #99 rolled to a stop in the midst of a big puff of smoke. After the restart, it was Damon Roberts leading every lap for the win, with second through fifth going to Dylan Roberts, Anderson, Nicki DuBois and Alex Hallin.

The third feature of the night belonged to the UMSS Micro sprints and Ty Sampeir. Sampeir started on the front row with last week’s winner, Tony Duran and heat race winner Greg Gunderson in row two. At the drop of the green, the top trio quickly accelerated, forming a tight grouping in the battle for the win. Sampeir held the point, with Duran lurking in second while “Silent Thunder” Gunderson was searching lines high and low for a path to the front. Duran’s mount stuttered and stalled on a restart, handing second place to Gunderson and bringing out a second caution. After the subsequent restart, Duran blasted around Sandy Traaseth and Allison Berger to get back into the top three. Up front, it was the Ty Sampeir show as the youngster fought back every challenge the crafty Gunderson threw his way. At the final double checkers it was Sampeir nabbing his second win of the season over Gunderson, Duran, Berger and Traaseth.
With the natural watering during intermission, The Valley’s quarter mile bull-ring was lightning fast for the WISSOTA Midwest Modified main event. Long time Valley racer John Remington grabbed the early lead from the outside of row one followed closely by Mitch Weiss and Ryan Olson. The lead trio utilized a wide swath of clay in their frenzied battle for the win, with Olson experimenting with myriad lines at every turn. Olson finally managed the pass underneath Weiss at the race’s midpoint but track positions were essentially irrelevant as the trio emerged from turn four in a three-wide battle for the lead. With just four circuits remaining, Olson finally made a pass that stuck coming out of turn four, claiming the top spot by mere inches on lap eleven. Once in front, Olson was able to build a small one-car length cushion for himself while Weiss and Remington were still locking horns for second. Olson claimed his first Valley win of the summer over Weiss, who was just inches ahead of Remington at the stripe, with Craig Elliot and David Mastell rounding out the top five.

As seems to happen every week at The Valley, the UMSS Traditional Sprints were a non-stop thrill-fest for the night’s final sanctioned race. Inaugural TSCS champion Kevin Bradwell and first heat race winner Jimmy Kouba paced the field to green for a race that would feature multiple three-wide battles throughout the field. Bradwell claimed the top spot early, with Kouba in tow but fire-breathing rookie Brian VanMeveren vaulted from his fifth starting spot to second in just two laps. Not wanting to be left out, Johnny Parsons, Cam Shafer and reigning series champion Rob Caho Jr. were throttle-stomping myriad grooves near the front in pursuit of Bradwell. At the crossed-flags, VanMeveren powered under Bradwell in turn two to stake his claim to the lead, leaving Bradwell to fend off Caho and Schafer. After a late caution, Bradwell resumed his assault on VanMeveren to retake the lead. Bradwell’s #95 sprinter was starting to respond to the high groove as he inched ever closer to the middle-groove running VanMeveren but the early leader simply ran out of laps as VanMeveren collected his first career sprintcar win in just his fifth race as a sprint pilot. Bradwell settled for second in front of Shafer, Caho and Ryan Olson.

The Valley celebrates the Nation’s birthday early next Friday, June 21, with its annual fireworks display, featuring some of finest pyrotechnics Fireworks Forever has to offer. The show also offers a final tune-up for the big Open Wheel Nationals the following weekend, June 28 and 29. Along with next week’s fireworks, all five regular classes are in competition: Future Fours, Pure Stocks, WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and UMSS Traditional and Micro Sprints. The first green flag is set to fly at 7:05 p.m. Details for this or any other event at St. Croix Valley Raceway can be found on the track’s website: www.SCVRaceway.com.
